Bullying A Serious Problem - 1326 Words

The issue of bullying may seem insignificant and petty, but the truth is we are conditioned to ignore it. The fear of being the next victim has caused many to lose sight of their moral compass when it comes to defending one another or standing up for what is right. Instead we cower and turn our attention to giving way to the biggest and loudest voice. Most people are prone to neglect the fact someone is being bullied, because once again they fear becoming the next victim. School bullying is a problem found all across the United States and around the world. It can take many forms, including physical violence, psychological bullying, name-calling, taunting, teasing, and social exclusion. It does the opposite of empowering students; physical and verbal abuse can result in lack of confidence, being unabl e to adjust to people or environments and overall failure to thrive. If there is no healing after physical and/or verbal abuse from the wounds inflicted, then the chances of the victim moving forward to success will not occur. Bullying is defined as â€Å"a process in which one person repeatedly uses his superior strength or influence to mistreat attack or force another person to do something.†1 Being bullied is a part of most every child’s life today; studies show that millions of kids are bullied each year with little to no intervention. Bullying can sometimes do permanent psychological damage which never heals. If not dealt with in a timely manner the students can undergo damage ending in insanity or suicide. Bullying does not only affect the victim, it can also traumatizes the innocent bystanders who witness the abuse while seemingly remaining helpless to stop the act. Bystanders can â€Å"be reluctant to attend school, feel fearful or powerless to act and guilty for not acting, have increased mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, and have increased use of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs.†2 Most bullying happens when a bystander is not around to
